Poker Rules

Texas Holdem is the most popular form of poker in the world. It’s what you see played on TV, and it’s what determines each year’s poker champ at the World Series of Poker. If you’re new to poker, start here.

Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better are closely related to Texas Holdem. The main difference is that you are dealt four cards instead of two, and your five card hand must be formed by two cards from your hand and three community cards. Strategies for winning differ significantly from Texas Holdem.

Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo 8 or Better are very different from either Texas Holdem or Omaha. Each player is dealt his or her own hand, and if you don’t like the hand you’ve been dealt you throw it in the pile. As a result, each player still in the hand must keep track of discarded cards so they can better estimate their chances and calculate other players’ odds.

Multi-Table Tournaments (MTT) and Sit and Go (S&G) Tournaments

A poker tournament is an event where players compete by playing poker against other players. It can be in the form of nine or ten players playing on one table “Sit and Go (S&G) Tournament), and as many as tens of thousands of players playing on thousands of tables (Multi-Table tournaments (MTT). The winner of the tournament is usually the person who wins every poker chip in the game and the others are awarded places based on the time of their elimination. In order to limit the time of tournament play, blinds rise over the duration of the tournament typically every 45 minutes. In a tournament setting the player’s cannot be cashed out for money and serve only to determine the player’s placing.
