Omaha Hi
Firstly, Omaha Hi is also known as Omaha Holdem or simply Omaha. Omaha is a variation of the very popular Texas Holdem game. Just as in Holdem, it’s a community card game, with players sharing the cards on the board. However, in Omaha, players are dealt four hole cards face down instead of two. The objective is to combine no more or less than two hole cards with three community cards to create the best five-card hand but there’s a catch: two and only two of the hole cards can be used in making the final hand.
As in Texas Holdem, the two players to the left of the dealer post the small and large blinds (forced bets) respectively. When four cards have been dealt face down to each live player, the action progresses with the player to the left of the large blind, and continue in a clockwise rotation.
The four hole cards make Omaha a nine-card game and having more cards to choose from means players will typically finish with stronger hands. Poker players being the people that they often are, the possibility of higher hands typically means that players stay in longer and the pots will grow accordingly.
In practice, Holdem players will find that the focus in Omaha Hi tends to be more towards playing the cards than playing the other players.
